So tday I went to my workshop and started cutting. I cut a square from 5.5mm plywood. I was cutting at 15mm/s and 12.5mA of current. The plywood was thicker than I thought but it cut through OK.Next I changed for 4mm thick plywood and tried to cut out my wife's name. The first thing I noticed was that the text was rotated through 90 degrees. I was cutting at 20mm/s and 12.5mA and it did not cut thru. I tried a few more times at 14.2 and 15.1mA but did not cut through. Also the kerf was wide and I think I need to install the air assist before I try again.
So I am going to try the air assist and then try marking by engraving an image to see what happens.
An interesting aside: when I installed th extraction fan, the cable was too short to reach the socket so I decided to replace with a longer cable. To my surprise the mains cable was attched to the motor by simply twisting the wires together and pushing a looses sleeve over them!!! All this at 240V!! I replaced the cable with a longer one and used cable connectors to join the wires.
